You've captured some really nice moments, Ashley. I like that you have a black and white mixed in. They all look very nice. Great emotion, nice perspectives.

I'd like to see some more variety of shots though. The majority are medium focal length shots... Other than that, good stuff.

I LOL-ed at the last comment you left for me, by the way.

Howdy, alright, not that my opinion matters in the slightest, but I love the new portfolio. I think it really shows off the broadest range of your talents and I was happy to se the hoola hoop picture in there. For me the weakest pictures were the lady getting measured, because you already had some really good moments and the boy playing soccer. Now, I pretty much just outed your two most simplistic and humanly shots, so it is a catch 22 for me. Great job. I'm so glad you are doing and shooting so well!

Ashley, I’m back from a short vacation in Sun Valley, Idaho. I had 2 much fun for guy my age. I partied with my 2 sons and some old friends. I will post some happy snaps on my blog in the next few days.

I checked out your updated portfolio.

First I would say your eye is developing nicely. I am familiar with most of the images but no all.

What I like about them is that they are unusual in their composition, the angle in which you made the images, and the fact that you are seeing beyond the obvious is great.

The bottom six images are taken from a low angle giving the viewer a different perspective. I like the little kids in the Mexican dance outfits. It is a full frame rich with color and expression and a dynamic composition.
The kid cheer leaders is a sweet shot as well due to the low angle and shooting throw the hoop giving the photograph depth and form.
The boy kicking the soccer ball is a nice clean. It has a surreal quality to it. The floating elements are what make’s it interesting for me. The unattended ball that is in the background floating is great. What is that kid doing in the background (right)? The horizontal striped shirt and the bright white horizontal wall add to the complexity and wonderment of the shot. In addition to the horizontal elements you have a lot of vertical element as well that all come together to make this a superb frame.

The group of people raking is quite nice. Again a dynamic angle, placement of the people and the rakes all working together to make this frame interesting. Again nice angle if you were standing straight up this frame wouldn’t have the impact it has now.

The band shot with the hands reaching to the singer is nice but a little bit of a tuff read and it lacks a focal point. It’s a nice graphic shot but doesn’t do much for me intellectually. It’s the kind of photo that is what you see is what you get which is true with most performance orientated photos.

The Gila Indian women getting measured is a really nice moment. The young girl with the pinwheels is just beautiful. Sweet shot! I like all the complementary colors on her dress as well as the colors on the pinwheels plus the clean background. If there is anything I could wish for is maybe her reaching up to touch one. Just wonder but I really like this frame.

The Soccer is nice clean peak action. The boxing shot doesn’t have the impact one would expect in a boxing match. You’re missing the action! I would lose it. Nice light minus the action.

On my monitor the women with her instruments is dark and difficult to see what she is doing. I like the rim light on her face, that is a beautiful and a quit moment. The entire left side of the frame is a mystery to me and I wonder if it hurts the overall composition. I would have liked to see your take from that assignment.

To conclude the carousel shot. I think it is a wonderful moment and a great opportunity for you. Although the women behind Brylee, is distracting to me! I think it’s because you can’t see her expression or involvement. I realize there isn’t anything you could have done to get ride of her. You seem to be a little to far away. I can’t pin point it but the composition is slightly off. Again I would have like to see your take from the assignment. I don’t remember seeing this one come through it must have been a weekend assignment or I just missed it.

All in all nice work! Keep pushing your comfort zone and learn as much as you can in Salt Lake.

Hope this helps see you Brad
